About  the  Firm

Gibbons & Gibbons, PC was established in 1993, one year after Joseph Gibbons joined the practice of Richard F Gibbons CPA. Dick Gibbons had been practicing for over twenty five years at this point specializing in individual tax. He has lectured extensively for the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors and taught accounting classes at the University of Maryland and George Mason University. This built a strong practice with a significant number of his clients in the real estate industry. Joe Gibbons came to the practice working in small business operations.

In order to be able to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service, Joe sat for and passed the Enrolled Agent Exam of the Internal Revenue Service in the fall of 1992. He later went on to pass all four parts of the CPA exam in one sitting in the fall of 1994. He then became one of the first Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisors in 1999.

With Dick’s expertise in individual tax and financial planning and Joe’s experience in small business operations, the practice began to grow.  Small business owners value the idea of a collaborative approach for both their business and personal accounting needs. Dick has always been a leader in the technology arena for CPA’s. He was one of the first to buy a personal computer in the early eighties to bring his tax return processing in house. With the growth of PC’s in the late eighties and early nineties the firm started supporting some of the first accounting software packages for small businesses. Over the years, the practice has continued to be on the cutting edge of technological advances in order to best serve its clients.

When QuickBooks first came out with their slogan “If you can write a check you can use QuickBooks” a number of accountants wanted nothing to do with it. As a matter of fact most accountants were afraid that QuickBooks would take work away from them. Gibbons & Gibbons embraced the Intuit philosophy early on that anything that made life for the small business owner easier was good for everyone. Joe started supporting QuickBooks in 1996 and has been doing so ever since. We pride ourselves on staying abreast of new technologies that can help small businesses. The QuickBooks desktop product has now evolved to the QuickBooks Online cloud system. Cloud accounting is where the world is moving and we are moving with it to help advise our clients on which tools will help them succeed.
